Henry Miller said "America is an air-conditioned nightmare." which is essentially the same bitter blather Dr. Thompson said. I still like his work. My pet-peeve is the use of "America" and the "United States" as synonyms. North, Central and South are all Americans. The United States of America is but one country (of three) in North America.
Wasn’t this in the Fear and Loathing at the Super Bowl piece that he did? It was a great piece but HST did favor hyperbole. And never aimed to be taken too seriously.
First, I agree with most of what you said. Second, you're shouting but I love your enthusiasm and your clear blind love for my home town. Third, you will not find strip clubs adjacent to day cares adjacent to gun stores or any combination thereof in Salt Lake, Park City or, I'd venture to bet, in any city or town in Utah where I have relocated. All of that said, Houston and most cities and towns in Texas certainly have a lot more...shall we say...flavor than most in Utah. Finally, what's wrong with pansexual cowboys?
HST - in his prime or otherwise sometimes had something to say - and sometimes not - regardless he kept on talking - with infamy came a willingness of many to publish anything he said - it’s a very largely inaccurate statement about Houston at anytime in its history - it is as such a slanderous statement to the town (likely intentional at that was his way of gaining interest or attention) and a disservice to the uneducated populous who read it or who will ever read it. For those who know - who cares ; - for those who do not but who care to learn - let them find out otherwise; - for those who do not know but do not care to learn - fuck them and then who cares
What the quote really means is that HST came to Houston and couldn't get the drugs he want ed - or maybe he got inferior quality dope

No, that was Super Bowl '74.

I think your read on the quote is precisely true, bit man did HST ever have a way with putting words together?!
