In another post, I shared the story of how Rip Torn's dad resurrected and widely promulgated the notion that most Southerners had long eaten black eyed peas on New Year's Day for good luck. Torn implied in his PR campaign for his native Henderson County, Texas, where BEPs were the staple crop, that the New Year’s tradition was both time-honored and widespread from Georgia through East Texas. In reality it was neither all that old nor renowned — but now it really is a reasonably old and well-known tradition.
